GHA Scholarship

We are currently accepting applications for the GHA Scholarship.  Consistent with our kaupapa-Maori focus, this scholarship aims to support greater Māori representation within the business community by proactively fostering and encouraging Māori into the accounting profession or wider business environment.  We are seeking applications from Māori students who are keen to enter the accounting profession and are committed to the Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand (CAANZ) pathway. In addition to this, we have extended our criteria to allow for applications from Māori students who are studying business with the intention of becoming Māori business professionals.

Value

We have a total scholarship pool of $15,000 to be awarded to the right applicant(s).

Payment

Scholarship recipients will receive payment in two instalments – the first being in line with semester one of the tertiary year and the second in line with semester two of the tertiary year.

Closing date

• 5pm | 28 November 2022

Who can apply?

We welcome applications from exceptional full-time Māori students who have demonstrated academic excellence, have an enthusiasm and commitment to work with Māori and are passionate about using their talent to benefit whanau, hapū and iwi.

Preference will be given to descendants of clients of GHA.  If you require assistance with identification in this regard please contact us directly through the key contact listed below.

Selection process

Applications received by 5pm 28 November 2022 will be reviewed and considered by a GHA selection panel.  The total number of scholarships and final value to be given will be determined by the panel and applicants will be advised in December 2022 of the final selection outcomes.

As a successful recipient of this scholarship, you will be required to be profiled on our website.  Students will need to confirm enrolment prior to payments being made.

Kirsten Rei | Partner

Kirsten Rei has been appointed as a Partner at GHA.  Kirsten is based in our Rotorua office and like Glenn, she was born and raised on the east side of Rotorua. Kirsten is a qualified lawyer and joined the GHA whānau in 2018 after 10 years working in Wellington, where she held a range of senior roles across the government sector. Prior to that, Kirsten worked in senior management for Tipu Ora Charitable Trust from 1999 to 2007.  Kirsten has a track record of building outstanding client relationships and has already demonstrated her specialist skills generating additional funding and resources for our clients.

Matiu Taurau| Senior Associate

Matiu Taurau has been appointed as a Senior Associate at GHA.  Matiu is based in our Tauranga office and joined GHA in 2015.   As a Chartered Accountant, he has had a range of transformational commercial roles in his career to date. Matiu has a personable approach with our clients, often travelling the motu to meet kanohi ki te kanohi. He excels at understanding and resolving complex client problems.

We have been operating for 15 years in August and these appointments are a further step in the evolution of GHA.  Our consulting division has experienced considerable growth over the past five years and both roles will provide the added leadership needed to deliver exceptional added value services.

Both changes are effective from 1 July 2020.

Xanthe Barton (Waitaha) is the inaugural recipient of the joint collaboration between GHA, Victoria University and Waitaha Charitable Trust.  Xanthe will be supported with a $12,000 scholarship to help her achieve her goals along with an internship at GHA in 2020.

This exciting new scholarship was initiated after discussions between Vivienne Robinson (Waitaha Charitable Trust), Paul Meredith (Victoria University) and Glenn Hawkins (GHA),  To provide a more meaningful contribution to emerging Māori talent undertaking study.  Our General Manager, Mereana Toroa, highlighted the uniqueness of the tripartite arrangement.

Mereana was also pleased to announce the first ever GHA internship which offers a Māori student the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a chartered accounting firm while also receiving the living wage.

Growing Māori talent is a key priority for GHA.

“Poipoia te kākano kia puawai – nurture the seed and it will blossom”.

The annual scholarships were awarded to five exceptional recipients who will benefit from the financial support provided. Our Māori talent will be nurtured and encouraged to contribute to kaupapa Māori organisations and their iwi.

A total of nine applications were received and five students were granted scholarships for study in 2020.  Four students were awarded the annual GHA scholarship and Xanthe Barton was also awarded the inaugural GHA Internship and Scholarship, awarded in partnership with Victoria University and Waitaha Charitable Trust.

The Partners presented scholarships to the value of $3,000 each to Kristal Boynton, Tia Hingston, Jazmin Henare and Denise Doctor.

Kristal Boynton

Te Rarawa, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Awa, Tūhoe, Tamakaimoana, Ngāti Hāmua, Te Patukirikiri

Kristal is currently an executive administrator at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi.  Kristal has an extensive background in administration and event management and has recently completed her Te Tohu Toi Tangata: Bachelor Humanities with a double Major in Business and Indigenous Administration.  Kristal will be completing an Executive Master’s in Business Administration (EMBA) through Massey University in 2020.  Upon completion of the EMBA Kristal’s aspires to become a Consultant and use her skills and degree to benefit her whānau, hapū and iwi to help empower Māori organisations.  In particular PSGE’s and their investment portfolios, to advise and help them to network and grow with larger national and international companies.

Tia Hingston

Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Hine

Tia will complete her Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accounting and Finance at Auckland University in 2020 after completing her final year at Rotorua Lakes High School. Tia hopes to utilise her qualifications within Māori organisations to help Māori, her iwi, hāpu and whānau grow their business within the Māori business and finance sectors.

Jazmin Henare

Te Arawa, Ngāi Tai (Ki torere), Ngāti Rangiwewehi

Jazmin is currently in her second year of tertiary studies at Toi Ohomai, Rotorua completing a Bachelor in Applied Business Management. Invested in Māori she plans to merge her passion for Business and cultural studies to combat negative Māori statistics through her direct line of mahi.  Since starting her journey in tertiary studies, Jazmin has been very diligent in the completion and standard of maintaining an A average. Jazmin is involved with kaupapa Māori community initiatives and aims to utilise her skills and credentials to uplift our people, her whānau, hāpu and iwi.

Denise Doctor

Te Arawa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Pikiao

Denise has over 20 years’ experience in both the Hotel and Real Estate Industries and is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Applied Management in Accounting at Toi Ohomai in Rotorua.

Denise is a strong believer in encouraging Māori to aim high in their education and to apply yourself to achieve the best for yourself and your whānau.  Denise will continue to focus on her my studies in accounting and te reo Māori knowing that it will be an investment to herself and her whānau.
